Conjunctivitis is a swelling or inflammation of conjunctiva, which is the outermost covering of eye and the inner eyelids. Common causes of conjunctivitis consist of infections and allergies. Conjunctivitis can be acute (for short period), chronic (long-lasting) or frequent in nature. Conjunctivitis is probably the most common disorder of the eyes.
It can be categorized into two types:
Infectious conjunctivitis is either viral or bacterial in origin and spreads to the other eye when one eye is infected. It also spreads to people coming in contact with the affected person.
Non-infectious conjunctivitis occurs because of pollen or pollutants or dust or household cleaners, entering the eye, smoke, underlying diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, cytomegalovirus Kawasaki's disease, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis. It does not spread. Herpes may also cause non-infectious conjunctivitis. Chemical conjunctivitis is caused due to exposure to toxic chemicals and burns. Allergic conjunctivitis is accompanied by irritation and nasal discharge as well which is worsen in dry weather and better by moist weather.
Stay away from allergens is one the best way of preventing allergic conjunctivitis.
Washing the face, eyes and hands recurrently during the day prevents infectious conjunctivitis.
Stay away from crowded places and using individual towels, napkins and handkerchiefs prevents the disease from spreading to others.
Homeopathy has huge scope in the treatment of conjunctivitis both the infectious & the non-infectious varieties through improving the immunity. Homeopathy is found to be more effective in chronic and inveterate conjunctivitis such as Phlyctenular conjunctivitis, immunologically mediated conjunctivitis, etc. All type of chronic and recurring conjunctivitis patients are strongly suggested to check the homeopathic option.
